How to become a content writer from scratch?

A personal journey from doubt and degrees to finding your voice on the page.

By Anna John (a writer who started from zero)

People often doubt themselves, even when a clear path is right in front of them. A few months ago, I was exactly there. After completing my master’s degree, everyone around me suggested safe and secure opportunities, mainly on the financial side. But something inside me kept fighting for something else. A deep desire to explore how to become a content writer from scratch, starting with nothing but passion and a willingness to learn. That burning curiosity to write, to create, and to connect with people through words was impossible to ignore.

“For me, writing is from the heart and that has never changed.”

Many people don’t understand how to make someone truly feel something through words. In this fast moving era, where content has become a tool to get paid, why would anyone care about something as “silly” as emotions? But here is what I have learned. Emotions are the key that unlocks words. They are something no one can hide.

I find independence in my words. That is how my career in content writing began. Starting from scratch is never easy, but it always begins with a single first step.

Where to begin your first step?

  • Take a pen and paper. Sit somewhere comfortable and simply think. Something will always come to your mind.
  • Write it down without judgment. Let the thoughts flow freely onto the page.
  • Rewrite and edit. Go back, refine and tighten your words.
  • Proofread. This final pass is the key step in every piece of writing, no matter the topic.

Whether you are writing about an object, a place, a person, or anything else, always think from the heart and not just the head. In the quiet moments, be the reaction that people remember. Be a unique voice, because emotions are always unique in their own way. What I feel is never exactly what you feel. That difference is your greatest asset as a writer.

Being relatable is the dream. Write for the ordinary person. Think from their perspective. That is when content writing becomes truly effective.

“As far as I know, you cannot really study content writing. It has to be lived through repeated research, analysis, and a genuine touch of emotion.”

There are countless writing classes and tutorials out there and many are valuable. But the best content writing is built through experience, by doing it over and over, studying what resonates, and bringing a piece of yourself to every piece you create.

To everyone reading this, I hope you find exactly what you are looking for in your career. Hoping for the best is one of the most powerful things we can do. Be optimistic and stay strong until you reach your destination.

Your story deserves to be told in your own words.
The first sentence is always the hardest. Write it anyway.
